Best Usenet Package

NewsHosting offers the best price relative to quality (Usenet + Newsreader Bundles)

Newshosting is a well known in the Usenet Service Provider (USP) industry. Newshosting has been around for a long time time (Since 1999 their motto is Our usenet is better than yours !!!) and has consistently offered premium usenet service for affordable prices. Over time Newshosting has built up considerable experience. Our tests show that NewsHosting offers the highest quality/price ratio in the industry, with customer feedback that agrees.

Several usenet providers offer a great price tag but don’t offer the best Usenet packages that will please both newsgroup beginners and experts:

  • NH Unlimited - $9.99/month or $99.99/year
The Newshosting Unlimited special offer comes with all you could ever want from a premium Usenet provider: - Unlimited Downloads - Unlimited Speed - Free SSL Encryption - 30 Connections - Days Binary Retention - 2+ Years Text Retention - 99%+ Completion - FREE Newshosting Usenet Browser - Read our Newshosting Newsreader Review
  • XL Powerpack - $19.95/month or $189.95/year
In addition to NH Unlimited, XL Powerpack subscribers will be able to search, preview and download from newsgroups with up to 10 GB of access through the Easynews web-based Usenet browser.

The unlimited plans are excellent value for money, especially with the new NH Usenet browser. Reliability, speed, and retention are excellent, they also have REAL customer support.

NewsHosting Browser V 1.6.1 implements a service called "Auto Search". This feature will display all new results for automatic searches and they can also be set to download. Auto Search results can be further filtered by file type and file size

NewsHosting is our favorite all-in-one Usenet service, Newshosting combines "acces - search - download" in an effective and efficient manner.

Best Value: Usenet + VPN

UsenetServer offers not only a low cost access to usenet but also a very high quality of service. Put an end to false economy!

UsenetServer is one of the preferred server of NGProvider with 3 advantages:

  • At the special promotional price of $10 for unlimited use with SSL, UsenetServer is a very good deal. Compared to its competitors, UNS is miles ahead with this newsgroup offer. But it is not just the price - the service is excellent as well. It includes days of backup, free SSL and high quality technical support. Our recent tests showed that UsenetServer had the optimum quality-price ratio. And customer feedback wholeheartedly agrees. And if a good price is your top priority, UsenetServer is offering completely unlimited access for only $95.40/year !
  • But it is not just the price -- the service is excellent as well. Consider it a low cost newsgroup subscription that doesn’t cut corners. UsenetServer uses Global Search, an NZB search engine similar to Binsearch - which is both easy and practical to use, with excellent results.
  • UsenetServer is definitely one of the best usenet providers for beginners. Simple 4 step subscription + Global Search to find content over the total retention + low cost. With their Unlimited Annual Offer and their great reliability you should be browsing their uncensored variety of newsgroups in minutes: Beginner's Guide to Usenet

Best European Usenet

The great advantage of Eweka compared to other European USPs is their retention equivalent to other major Usenet providers. Other USPs in Europe offer a maximum of 1100 days retention via NZB=Message-ID. (The Header retention, which means what show when you update your groups is slightly less.)

Eweka is offering full header retention = 2114 days of Usenet headers. The headers allow you to search content within groups from the filenames (Headers) and from the descriptions that appear.

Eweka provides a good service otherwise too: a Dutch provider, diverse payment methods (including Paypal), a good price and an NZB tester.

Eweka allows account sharing of 8 connections on Standard account

IPs based in the USA are not allowed to subscribe so to do you will need to go through a VPN - We advise you IPVanish

ExtremeUsenet is located in Holland and uses Dutch Usenet servers. It bears noting that:

  • Unlike other Dutch USPs eg. SnelNL, ExtremeUsenet has officially registered its business in Holland and stores its servers there too. Read our rundown of European Usenet servers.
  • Flatrate accounts you need to choose a speed that matches your connection. I have been using ExtremeUsenet for about 3 months now and have no complaints. I purchased the 3-month 12mbit subscription (Approx $22 USD) as a test period and everything i've thrown at it up to 900 days old has been complete.
  • Their site is in Dutch and English. And, their customer support speaks perfect English.

ExtremeUsenet is a TOP choice if a good price is your top priority, then a Dutch location can be beneficial. ExtremeUsenet offers unlimited Usenet access as low as 4€/Month !

Shareable usenet: Extremeusenet.nl allows account sharing on all packages

My favorite dutch provider as backup server (Cheap + account sharing) and if you are looking for backup\fill server with more retention you can get a Eweka account

Best Usenet Bundle

Newsdemon offers a plan for everyone. Unlike many Usenet providers who tend to offer only one type of package, Newsdemon has a choice of three:

  • Monthly Limited account: Subscribe for a certain amount of GB, renewable every month.

  • Block Usenet account: A range from 10 GB to 1000 GB !!!!. Their most interesting deal, it comes without any time limits. Buy a certain amount of GB and use them when it suits you. No obligation for renewal. The block account option (somewhat ignored by most newsgroup providers) does have several advantages. For example, you only consume as much as you buy, with the option of occasional use. And it can be used to supplement another server with poor retention or completion rates: back up Usenet. Newsdemon is one the King of newsgroup block accounts with Usenet-News

  • Unlimited newsgroup access: Newsdemon offers two Unlimited plans ranging from $10/month to $18/month
    • Newsdemon Unlimited Pro $10/month - Newsdemon offers unlimited speeds and secure access to over 107,000 uncensored groups. Features include 50 simultaneous 256-Bit SSL Connections, 99% Completion, and long retention. This Unlimited Pro Plan includes Unlimited GB Secure Online Storage Ninja Account
    • Best Usenet Bundle: Newsdemon Platinum account $18/month ($13 for First Month) - This plan includes Secure VPN Access. You can browse the net with complete confidence knowing that your identity cannot be obtained, and all information that you send and receive will be completely encased in an impenetrable encrypted shell. Visit VPN-Providers to learn more about VPN Services. The combination of Usenet + VPN means excellent protection for safe Internet use.

What’s more they provide an excellent technical support via Live Chat, an up-to-date blog, a strong presence on Twitter, as well as Newsrover (newsreader) for free.

Best Usenet Only

Astraweb is one of the last few independent Usenet providers offering newsgroup deals that still own and run their own servers (NOT an Usenet-reseller). They own newsgroup servers and don't resell their access.

Astraweb offers a unlimited Usenet secure subscription for $11/month or $15/2 Months or $96/Year with retention for more than 1600 days binary retention and continuing to grow. Astraweb is perfect if you want just Usenet-only access with no features like VPN, search engine or usenet browser.

Question is, what's the pro's and con's of Astraweb ? Here are the pros and cons of Astraweb:

  • * Pros : Privacy is something that is becoming more and more important everyday on Usenet. More and more people ask about anonymity and privacy. How secure Usenet is? - Are any logs kept? - Post anonymously to Usenet? In addition to ssl connection (This encryption helps to keep your username and password safe - This will also prevent your ISP of throttling your bandwith speed or using deep packet inspection technologies) Astraweb promises not to keep any logs (Except for crucial server operations logs. These are totally anonymous and do not log your username at all) of downloads and news reading activity, offer anonymous postings and they have anonymous group requests.
  • * Cons : Can get touchy with slow speeds sometimes (speed issues) In order to combat Speed averages, it is advisable to combine Astraweb and a multi-server Newsreader like Sabnzbd. With Astraweb you can have 10 connections with the European address (ssl-eu.astraweb.com) and a further 10 with the American one (ssl-us.astraweb.com) - There are occasionally files that are incomplete

A good Newsgroups Server. Newsgroupdirect has been our favourite for a long time. I have never had an outage and they are increasing retention up to 2120 days.

The only flaw of NewsgroupDirect is that it is slightly more expensive than average. But NewsgroupDirect does offer good discounts.

  • Like many users we appreciate the frequent and numerous promotions:
  • NGProvider special offer: Unlimited account with SSL (50 connections) at $96/annually ( coupon code: ngd100086 ) is an excellent Deal. Newsgroupdirect also offers 30 GB of free online storage (via StorageNinja) with their Unlimited account. Enjoy 30 GB of free online storage. Online storage gives you the peace of mind of having your critical files safe and secure.

Recently NewsgroupDirect and GhostPath joint VPN offer. NewsgroupDirect customers can get a monthly account from Ghost Path for just $6/month while the regular rate is $15 per month. 'That is 60% discount off the regular monthly cost). Advantages and benefits of VPN service ? VPN creates a secure and encrypted tunnel between your computer and the VPN. Any surfing is done behind the VPN protection. Everything that passes between you and the VPN is secured by an encypted tunnel that can transmit up to 2048 bits! How do I get a discount? Reliable Usenet provider for bitcoin

UsenetBucket is part of our Top Three European (Dutch) Usenet Providers. We described its main characteristics when we tested UsenetBucket: Price, XSNews reseller, Free Usenet Trials.

But UsenetBucket has one major difference from ExtremeUsenet and Eweka, in that it now accepts Bitcoin as a payment method.

As virtual money, Bitcoin is very appropriate for the spirit of the Usenet network which is also decentralised (with no central authority), also secured by SSL and lets the user remain anonymous.

PureUsenet is a Dutch providers (Dutch Usenet Access), according to their Twitter the servers are located in Europe but the company is based in Curaçao in the Caribbean. They resell Euroaccess, a dutch based newsgroup provider

Like all Dutch providers, PureUsenet is cheap and offers less retention than american based. PureUsenet provides only Speecapped Usenet account, Speedcapped plans start from 2,29 € a month.

PureUsenet's best asset is its free trial offer over 7 days with unlimited downloads. An excellent way to explore this USP. (the Pure Usenet trial is for Dutch users/Dutch IP visitors only.)

Here are the pros and cons of PureUsenet:

  • * Pros : Cheapest usenet (A 4 Mbit/s capped account can be ordered for as low as 2,29 €/Month) - The retention is 1,100 day (but their header retention is much lower, around 300 days.) - Bitcoin as payment method
  • * Cons : Free Trial is only for Dutch users - They took away the paypal payment - No English sign up page, their site is only in Dutch.

Best reseller of ReadNews service

Since 2003 Ngroups.Net provides usenet access (have been around a long time. !). Ngroups have been a UNS Holdings reseller, they recently changed for Readnews.

Readnews (Very dynamic - and in direct competition with UNS Holdings. No sister services nor individual access) is a tier-1 Usenet (Newsgroup resellers) and sells Usenet service to U.S.P.

Ngroups.Net has just upgraded their service with one mission: provide the best services at the lowest price. Through Readnews, Ngroups provides Usenet access with excellent binary retention (over 1500 days now) and free SSL.

  • Ngroups has changed its service for reselling newsgroups. Its new Usenet-reseller is now ReadNews. After some technical difficulties in transferring from UNS Holdings service to Readnews, Ngroups has restabilized the connection speed on the US server and especially on the Dutch server which used to suffer from overloaded connections and insufficient speed for old files. Now everything is in order and Ngroups can guarantee stable connection speed for all groups and posts 1500 days retention
  • Ngroups is also offering secure online space for data backup free of charge with its partner LiveDrive. You can use it to store and swap data, photos videos, direct streaming through iphone/ipad... all unlimited !!! (This service normally costs $6,95 on its own!)
  • Ngroups with its partner association Usenet-News has made a commercial succes of good quality block accounts. Our review of Usenet-News - Block-account information
  • Recently NGroups.Net has launched FREE VPN service, included for users having an Unlimited Ngroups.NET Usenet account.
The VPN service offers servers in two locations, US or UK . The VPN is currently using the pptp protocol. Their VPN service seems to be provided by Itsvpn
    • $9.99 - "Unlimited Eco" account - Ngroups.Net has reduced its price by 25%!!!. Even better, thanks to our partnership NGProvider and Ngroups.Net can offer the exclusive deal of unlimited access (1500 days retention - 30 connections) plus Unlimited online storage plus VPN (users are limited to 5Mbps speed and 50GB/month transfer via the VPN servers.) for just $9.99/month (Identify our deal by the message: Welcome Ngprovider visitor to Ngroups.NET)
    • $19.99 - "Unlimited Extra" users have no limit in speed or transfer via the VPN servers. Nice bundle package if you’re looking for an extra layer of data transfer security.

We recommend "Unlimited Extra" for $19.99. That's a pretty good price, if you look at the package you get:

  • Unlimited Usenet downloads
  • No speed limit
  • Unlimited online storage
  • Free VPN service
  • Alternative to UNS Holdings Usenet servers.

King of newsgroup BlockAccount

Usenetnews is a Block-account specialist (like Newsdemon). Sister site to Ngroups (with the same 1500 day retention and the same servers), Usenet-news was the first Usenet server to specialise in newsgroup block accounts. The result: an impressive range of options (from 2GB to 1024GB) at very low prices. Per GB the price is as low as 0.09 USD/GB when you buy 1024 GB for $92

Usenet-News is the top block account provider, offering both a good price and 60 simultaneous connections and You may connect simultaneously from different IPs
Block-Accounts can be very useful even if unlimited newsgroup accounts seem to render them redundant. There are at least 4 main advantages:

  • Many users use mainly free access to newsgroups and need a block account to supplement their main service
  • Pay as you go
  • Excellent method of discovering or testing newsgroup access at unbeatable prices
  • Use Usenet-News as the “backup server” (Fill server)

NGProvider has created a comparison table for all the block account options - organised by size - from all the best providers: Summary of Usenet Block Account options

Giganews' main flaw is its price.

Giganews has always had higher rates than the average, which was once justified. For a long time they surpassed everyone else in high retention and completion. And they added innovations like SSL which is now a standard for all current USPs.

But for the last few years other USPs have now been able to offer the same techical service for a lower price. Today Giganews offers Usenet access with retention 10 days longer than its competitors but a much higher price.

To continue its $30/month rate, Giganews had to add more options:

  • VPN: With VyprVPN. Included free in the Diamond deal.
  • Online Storage: DumpTruck. 30GB of free online storage allow you to back up your files where they are safe and easily accessed.

For $30/month ($360/year) you get a Usenet bundle (Diamond Package) which includes Usenet access + VPN + online storage space. But the Diamond package has three flaws:

  • IHigh quality but too expensive. If you want VPN access and Usenet access we advise you combine Newshosting ($99/year) with HideMyAss ($78.66/year) or even Private Internet Access. For much less money you will have the same result.
  • You aren't free to choose your VPN. VyprVPN is included. But the VPN market is dynamic. There are many different VPNs out there, so it is better to choose your VPN according to your own criteria: countries, logs, servers, protocols, price.
  • The Diamond package ($360/year) is only convenient for those that regularly make the most of both services (Usenet + VPN). The priority of USPs is to offer Usenet access, so the options should only be seen as free bonuses.

Altopia is something of a UFO when it comes to the Usenet Providers’ market. Signing up to Altopia is similar to stepping back in time, to Usenet as it was at the end of the 20th century: an era when lots of small and independent USPs offered a basic service with weak retention (like Octanews), a simple webpage, and limited payment methods (CB) and packages based on the number of connections.

In the first years of the new millennium many of these USPs were bought up, or closed down because they did not develop with the times.

Altopia resisted and even boasts a solid base of loyal users who are interested in their Text hierarchies and Multipart binaries from between 2 and 15 parts (mostly jpegs).

From a technological point of view, Altopia is far behind is competitor: only 9-10 days retention on Multi-part binaries with more than 15 parts, completion (apart from DMCA files) which doesn’t reach 99% and only one server in the USA. You can only pay with credit card. (N.B.The account is not set up instantly, it takes a few hours.) But SSL is included for free!

But Altopia has a certain charm as an “outsider.” The speed of our package of 5 connections ($9.00/month) was not always stable. However for our usage the 10 days retention were easily enough, and matched Altopia’s promises.

Altopia has the privilege of being the last of the “small” USPs in America, not very well-known, almost a secret.

XSUsenet is mainly known for its free Usenet access which is very popular. But this server also offers a paying Usenet service that has won over more than 200 000 users (according to their statistics). It is true that their prices are attractive, putting them in competition with the Ultra Low Cost USPs.

XSUsenet is located in Sweden and uses Dutch servers. It bears noting that:

  • In common with other Dutch USPs, XSUsenet offers low prices but a poor retention.
  • Their prices are calculated on your connection speed. XSUsenet offers Flatrate Usenet accounts.
  • Their support is non-existent. Nothing back from them after 5 emails. Seems they don't reply to emails
  • XSUsenet is experiencing difficulties with Paypal.

It is obvious that this free offer uses a lot of human and technological resources. The site has only change design and paying options... only to reappear now based in Sweden.

HitNews offers Usenet access from servers based in the USA (UNS Holdings reseller)as well as its headquarters. So like all USPs situated in the US it is liable to DMCA. But the difference between the big American USPs that offer 2000 days retention and HitNews is the latter barely has 1100 days.

The prices are only advantageous for small connections (HitNews has speedcapped accounts based on your ADSL connection speed) because from 10 mbit it will be much more cost efficient to subscribe to NewsHosting by the year ($99) which gets you a lot more for the same price: 2120 days retention (instead of 1100), 30 connections (instead of 8) and a free Newsreader.

However during our tests the bandwidth corresponded to the 10 mbit deal with 8 SSL connections. As for the retention, it was overstated by HitNews since the 1100 days is onnly valid for certain groups.

Usenext - Strictly Dutch based Usenet -

No extra features, just Usenet-only offer

Flaterate account 1m: 9.95 € (30GB: Data transmission with full bandwidth + Thereafter: access with up to 1,000 kbit/s)

Flaterate account 1m: 14.95 € (80GB: Data transmission with full bandwidth + Thereafter: access with up to 1,500 kbit/s)

Flaterate account 1m: 24.95 € (250GB: Data transmission with full bandwidth + Thereafter: access with up to 2,000 kbit/s)

Binary Retention: 1000 days Binary Retention

Hostname:

news.usenext.com

Available Ports:

119, 563 (SSL)

Concurrent Connections: Up to 30

Usenext like FirstLoad or Usenet.Nl are part of the Usenet servers which have three characteristics:

  • A generous free trial offer of 150 to 300 GB to use in 14 days.
  • Flatrate subscription: unlimited speed up to a certain number of GB, then limited speed.
  • Monthly rate much higher than the average.

These offers seem attractive but in reality they are not worth it.

Many people sign up to these Usenet servers to take advantage of the free trial offer but then complain about a payment that corresponds to one year's subscription. If you do not cancel the account in 14 days then you have to pay the yearly subscription by default. (Don't forget to read the terms and conditions!)

The flatrate package is no longer worthwhile. Now all the Newsgroup providers offer unlimited access at $10 and without any speed or data restrictions => NewsHosting or UsenetServer

The only advantage of this newsgroup provider is that is offers an integrated download programme. It is preconfigured with a search engine equipped for nzb. Ideal for beginners. If ease of use of newsgoups is important for you then choose Newshosting with more than 2120 days retention, a cheaper monthly rate ($9.99) and a free newsreader ten times better than Usenext !!!

Finally: many users get to know Newsgroups through these sites or because of these free trials. But Usenet cannot be summed up by Usenext, Firstload or Usenet.Nl.

Usenext, that appeared in 2004, is a provider like any other. But Usenext has been pulling in users from the beginning with its attractive trial offers. The problem is that these strategies are ruining Usenet. Many people find it difficult to close their accounts after the trial, casting a shadow on trustworthy Usenet services.

NzbLord -

- NzbLord $14.95/month - Unlimited Download (No SSL) - Speed: 10 Mb/s

- NzbLord: 700 days binary retention

Web-Based Binary Usenet Client (Web-Based NZB Downloader)  is a web interface that allows you to download Usenet content from an NZB on an internet browser. No more Newsreader, just an NZB and a browser. This is currently a very popular option.

It takes Usenet usage to the maximum simplicity by aiming to reduce it to the sole function of downloading via NZB without the other aspects (searching by header text, posts, image viewing, Ubackup, group creation).

In fact only one of Usenet’s many functions is offered by this client. But if the idea of a web-based interface appeals, then we would advise Easynews that makes the most of Usenet through its Webnewsgroup.
