What is Usenet?

Usenet is a network protocol that dates back to 1979. It is a decentralized network, that respects neutrality, anonymity, privacy and security. We can access Usenet through a Usenet Service Provider. The best News Service Provider is Newshosting

Usenet offers High Speed Downloads, reliability and safety, even compared to popular file-sharing protocol such as Torrents. (Usenet vs Torrents)

NEWSGROUP REVIEWS - BEST UNLIMITED USENET PLAN

=> The most complete Usenet package (Unlimited Usenet access with 3 news server addresses + Newsreader + VPN): NEWSHOSTING Usenet Package costs $9.99/month or $99.99/year
Even better, this newsgroup offer is just $8.50 a month for a year’s subscription.

Click here for Newshosting Special Offers

Usenet has evolved a lot recently (more complex content searching) and the technical factor that bears the most weight is now completion. Newshosting is the USP the most adapted to these new conditions. What is the completion level for Newshosting on whole files and Message-IDs? Newshosting helps me make my downloads automatic? Is Newshosting a good USP for the completion method via Message-IDs?

Newshosting is the best USP to get 100% completion. The completion of 100% of your files is still possible on Usenet depending on the content, the download time and the quality of the remaining Message-IDs:

  • With Newshosting you can download unlimited files at unlimited speed and it’s as easy as point, click, download. Most Usenet users still only need one USP for their Usenet activities (downloading files, viewing images, participating in group text). Newshosting is the best Usenet Service Provider for user that only want one USP. For example it makes sense for German users to use a Usenet indexing sites and to download via NZB (An NZB file is a collection of Message-IDs grouped in one file). Dutch users should configure SpotNet 2.0 with Newshosting and make the most of the referencing quality of SpotNet. European users can use both servers in Holland and Germany for a faster connection speed.

  • Newshosting is the best USP for completion via Message-IDs. 100% completion by downloading Message-IDs from one file from several USPs works very well. The Usenet MultiFeed is a good alternative to automatic downloads, which is hard to set up. Newshosting has the advantage of three server locations in the USA, Holland and Germany. If you use three connection addresses (news.ams.newshosting.com and news.fr7.newshosting.com and news.iad.newshosting.com) you can access different parts (Message-IDs) of the same file. To increase your chances of completion add all the servers

  • NewsHosting has a VPN. Newshosting VPN lets you download via torrents if necessary. It is a free VPN to use with VUZE to protect your IP address. It comes free with the annual plan and is perfect for other downloading methods. Usenet is the most secure and confidential network for its users. But sometimes we still need to torrent a file. But the torrenting network is not at all confidential which is why Newshosting offers a VPN to let you secure and anonymise your torrents. (We recommend the Dutch server!)

Best Usenet Package

NewsHosting is our favourite Usenet access since Newshosting is well adapted to the new Usenet network and to its users' expectations.

Before most Usenet users thought retention was the most important factor, as well as connection speed, SSL and the number of connections. As for referencing it was manual and centralised on one or two sites.

Now the first characteristic of a USP is the completion (Files and Message-IDs) of its Usenet network. The other evolution (independent of USPs) is the searching for files and referencing (for obscutated files).

Newshosting has three advantages:

1 - Unlimited Usenet access with the free Newsreader lets me download lots of files. I can search and download files thanks to:

The search engine that scans the entirety of the binary groups hosted by Newshosting with a retention of 3050 days.

To the Group headers – Uploaders more and more often put an image file in their post. The Newshosting Newsreader has this image appear in the Header. So an obscutated file appears thanks to the image.

Automatic downloading - This function doesn't has the same capacities as Couchpotato or Sonaar but is largely sufficient. The automatic search also decrypts obscutated files.

All files found by the Newsreader from Newshosting are totally complete. Newshosting is sufficient on its own.

2- Newshosting is the best USP for completion of Message-IDs. Newshosting owns three server locations: US (news.iad.newshosting.com) - Holland (news.ams.newshosting.com) - Germany (news.fr7.newshosting.com) that let you increase your chances of getting Message-IDs. In the example below I put the three alternative servers from Newshosting in to Sabnzbd to see the completion of Message-IDs in one file.

Newshosting is the best primary server for Usenet Multi-Feeds. Newshosting is my favorite unlimited full-speed provider. With other secondary servers that have unlimited access like Eweka (Eweka network), ExtremeUsenet (Base IP network) or block accounts (XSNews) you can get an excellent completion rate from Message-IDs.

3 - Newshosting VPN. Don't forget about this free VPN. Newshosting VPN can be used for torrenting. NewsHosting VPN has lots of servers in Holland. With VUZE, Newshosting VPN is perfect for downloading torrents.

Newshosting is the only USP that really allows you to discover the new Usenet which is focused on decentralisation.

EWEKA - Tier 1 provider

Corporate offices are based in Holland

Usenet servers geographic locations: Holland Servers - Eweka owns and operates its own datacenter in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

No extra features, just Usenet-only offer

Eweka Special offer: 100 Mbps 7.50 €

Binary Retention: 3000 days Binary Retention

Hostname:

newsreader.eweka.nl

Regular Port: 119

SSL Port: 563

Concurrent Connections: up to 8

Best Usenet for Europe

Eweka.nl – NGProvider – 100 Mbit Special Pricing 7.5 €/month

Eweka provides an excellent service: a Dutch provider (EU Based servers are not subject to US DMCA laws), diverse payment methods (including Paypal), a good price and an NZB tester. The great advantage of Eweka compared to other European USPs is their retention equivalent to other major Usenet providers. Eweka currently has 3050 days of binary retention and double the retention rate of pretty much any other Dutch provider.

Eweka can be used as a sole USP thanks to:

Its completion level for the most recent posts is very good. If you make your downloads automatic and get files soon after they are posted then they come whole.

Its 3000 day retention (Other USPs in Europe offer a maximum of 1200 days retention) lets Eweka users search for old indexed files

Eweka has the best VPN. IPVanish is offered for free with all accounts paying 90 days in advance (Your IPVanish account, a €10/mo. value, will remain free to use as long as your Eweka account remains active). IPVanish lets you search for any missing files on other networks in total security. IPVanish allows Torrents. IPVanish VPN is a popular choice for torrent downloaders looking to keep their torrent traffic anonymous. IPVanish has a new service feature for torrent users who want to mask their IP address, but prefer no encryption for faster speeds. The all new IPVanish SOCKS5 proxy servers are configurable with torrent clients. We recommend you install it on SOCKS5 for uTorrent to download securely without risking your IP being broadcast to the whole torrenting network.

Eweka is a good USP if you want to build your own MultiFeeds Usenet. Its completion for Message-IDs is good since:

They own their network (T1 USP) and therefore their own Message-IDs.

Eweka is not subject to the same process of DMCA auto deletion than US providers. But they do have something similar called NTD Gedragscode.

Eweka allows account sharing of 8 connections. An unlimited plan can be shared with many users. So for 4 users the unlimited plan at 100 Mbps comes to less than €2 / month.

You can test Eweka for 7 days to test their Message ID completion.

USENETSERVER - Tier 1 provider

Corporate offices are based in US

Usenet servers geographic locations: USA Servers - Holland Servers - Germany Servers - UsenetServer owns and operates its own multi-gigabit server farms throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Extra Usenet features included with High-Speed Plus Special :

High-Speed Plan 1m: $10 ( days w/ 20 connections with SSL + Global Search + add VPN for $4.99 a month)

=> $95.40 for 12 months + Free VPN Best Annual Usenet Deal

Binary Retention: days Binary Retention

Hostname - server addresses:

news.usenetserver.com port(s): 23, 25, 119, 3128, 8000 and 9000

secure.usenetserver.com port(s): 563, 443 and 8080 (Encrypted Access)

Concurrent Connections: 10 or 20

Best free Usenet search engine

UsenetServer has lots of advantages including:

Price. UsenetServer offers not only a low cost access to usenet but also a very high quality of service. Put an end to false economy! Usenetserver is the better way to get cheap Unlimited Usenet-Only. UsenetServer is the number ONE in price: One year at only $95.40 (Comes to $7.95 a month!). Just Usenet and Cheap. Users of Couchpotato, Sonaar or Sickbeard that make their downloading automatic will be very happy with UsenetServer.

Their NZB search engine. UsenetServer uses Global Search, an NZB search engine similar to Binsearch - which is both easy and practical to use, with excellent results. Global Search feature is a nice addition - The service actually allows you to search all the binary newsgroups across their full range of binary retention, and find binaries, generate NZBs and download them with the downloader of your choice.

Their free VPN included with the annual rate. It is a real advantage to have a VPN since it allows users to have Usenet as a primary source for files, but to make use of another network if necessary. In our case, UsenetServer VPN could be using for torrenting. The best torrenting programme is VUZE since it has an IP Bind in its options.

How is UsenetServer's completion of Message-IDs? Is it the same as Newshosting?

Yes: UsenetServer has good completion from Message-IDs (3 server locations – USA news.iad.usenetserver.com – NL news.ams.usenetserver.com – DE news.fr7.usenetserver.com) and can be used as an unlimited primary server for Multi-feed Usenet access.

No: The Message-IDs present on the Newshosting and UsenetServer are not the same although they lots in common. The point of completing Message-IDs is to get USPs that have the remaining Message-IDs (not exactly same Message-IDs) that will complete a whole file.

There is some confusion around UsenetServer and Newshosting as well as with EasyNews. These three USPs do not use the same network! Newshosting and EasyNews are sister companies of UsenetServer. But they run different servers, different storage and different NNTP architecture software. This is why I often noticed during my many tests that they didn't have exactly the same number of Message-IDs but had many similar. In a Multi-feed Usenet the important element is the difference of Message-IDs.

The leading browser-based Usenet newsgroup engine

Easynews is for people that want a totally different Usenet experience than with other USPs.

1- EasyNews offers a completely unique newsgroup service unlike any other.

Easynews offers a web-based interface which makes using Usenet very easy. For those who are new to Usenet and want the easy route, we recommend Easynews: Just search, preview and then watch or download. EasyNews makes finding videos, images and audio files as easy as possible for new users. Easynews has launched Easynews' official 3rd party mobile applications. These are great apps for accessing your Easynews account and browsing the newsgroups on the go!

2- Easynews is also for those that want to install Usenet access on KODI. How to install Easynews Kodi Addon?

There are lots of plans with EasyNews. Some advice to help you out:

if your first priority is KODI and classic downloads via Newsreader or automatic programmes then you need the NNTP unlimited rate at $9.95 / month.

For the web interface we recommend the CLASSIC PLAN at 49.98 / month to test it out.

Usenet Account sharing is available on all packages

ExtremeUsenet is located in Holland and uses Dutch Usenet servers.

ExtremeUsenet will be useful for many different kinds of Usenet users:

For just Usenet access: ExtremeUsenet is a TOP choice if a good price is your top priority, then a Dutch location can be beneficial. ExtremeUsenet offers unlimited Usenet access as low as 4€/Month !. The rates are calculated according to your connection speed. During my tests all the speeds were respected. Dutch users can easily configure SpotNet 2.0 with ExtremeUsenet.

ExtremeUsenet allows you to share your Usenet account with your friends. You can use the account from multiple IP addresses, but you can’t exceed the maximum number of simultaneous connections. If the maximum number of connections if 8, you and your buddy each get to use 4.

The final advantage of ExtremeUsenet is that this USP is easy to integrate into a Multi-feeds Usenet. The point of Multi-feeds is to accumulate USPs to get all the Message-IDs of one file from several USPs.

ExtremeUsenet is part of our TOP USPs MultiFeeds since they are so cheap:

All plans offered by ExtremeUsenet can be shared, reducing the price.

ExtremeUsenet has Discount Plans from € 2.50/month !

ExtremeUsenet is one of my favorite dutch provider as backup server (Cheap + account sharing)

Who needs this kind of account:

Those that use Usenet rarely. Remember that Newsgroupdirect usenet block accounts never expire so you can use them whenever you want.

We recommend a block from Newsgroupdirect to compliment for fills and as a backup. Anyone building a Usenet Multi-feeds to get 100% Message-IDs completion should have a block from NewsgroupDirect. Why ? Their prices are low and block accounts are shareable between several users. The number of Message-IDs available is significant because NewsgroupDirect has three server locations: USA – Holland – Germany (Each location has its own Message-IDs). NewsgroupDirect blocks can be used for a Usenet combo (one unlimited plan + block account) with unlimited rates from these USPs: Eweka - ExtremeUsenet - UsenetBucket - Astraweb - XSNews - Usenet.Farm

Many payment methods as possible

The Usenet network has undergone two revolutions in recent times:

  1. Completion via Message-IDs has become a key element for the network. The technical capability lets you get a file from several USPs giving the user great freedom to download.
  2. The Usenet network is also reactive to users' needs: anonymity and confidentiality. Respect for network neutrality is an essential value of Usenet. This is why many USPs guarantee their users no surveillance of their activity (no monitoring), no user data stored and the possibility to pay anonymously.

UsenetBucket is the best Usenet Service Provider in these new categories:

  1. Possibility to pay anonymously. Bitcoin and Paysafecard (Europe only) are on offer.
  2. No personal data: as long as the payment method is anonymous then user data doesn't mean anything. This is why they only need an email address to send you the technical details of UsenetBucket: address, port connections.
  3. Uploading is anonymous: the Usenet community survives on uploading. This is why you need a USP like UsenetBucket and a VPN (IPVanish) to post.

Other technical characteristics of Usenetbucket: Usenetbucket uses the Dutch network XSNews. Prices offered by UsenetBucket are some of the best. This USP is good for those looking for quality Usenet access. UsenetBucket is recommended for completion of Message-IDs since UsenetBucket will fill in remaining parts at a low price (lots of special offers).

USENET.FARM - Hybrid Usenet provider

Corporate offices are based in Holland

Usenet servers geographic locations: Holland Servers - Usenet.Farm owns its small cluster that can contain approx 30 days of data in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Block Plan: 15 € - 500 GB

Hybrid Usenet Provider

Usenet.Farm is a modern USP that meets the needs of the new Usenet.

This new Usenet is based on completing files through Message-IDs from different USPs (Usenet Multi-feed) and on increased anonymity and confidentiality.

  1. Usenet.Farm is a rare USP to offer multi-feed Usenet (multiple providers = multiple backbone) from one plan. Usenet.Farm is the best Hybrid Usenet access: This Usenet provider is a Tier 1 because they own a part of their network. Usenet.farm confirms that the the first 30 days retention belong to them. Usenet.farm has its small retention but have backup fills from XSnews and from another T1 USP. Usenet reseller since the rest of the retention is provided by anothers Tier 1 Providers. Usenet.farm is resellers of the Dutch provider XSNews (NL back-end provider) and another T1 USP which ensures the rest of the retention up to 1100 days. Obviously XSnews and this T1 USP also completes articles if they are missing from their own retention (no Feed, no Peering)
  2. Anonymity and respect for user data: Usenet.farm is very open on the subject. Usenet.farm doesn't need any personal information and encourages you to pay via Bitcoin, anonymising the data (removing your IP) after 1month. Usenet.Farm is based in Holland, one of the best jurisdictions for privacy

Why there is less missing articles with Usenet.Farm ?

Usenet.Farm has a plan from multiple backend providers. With Usenet.Farm you access to 3 different backend providers (Usenet.farm uses XSnews and other T1 after their own retention) with only having 1 account !!! With Usenet.Farm there is less missing articles because if Usenet.Farm can't find it on their local retention they check XSNews/T1 for the article. So with Usenet.Farm you have a much better chance of completion. Usenetfarm is currently offering new customers a 10 GB free trial, the trial offer of 10GB is definitely sufficient to test the completion of this new USP. It is unlimited by time as well.

Can you use Usenet.Farm in combo with another USP?

The answer is YES. And we recommend using Usenet.Farm with Newshosting. Newshosting unlimited (three server addresses) with bring you the essential Message-IDs to make up a file. Then a block account with Usenet.Farm (their block is one of the cheapest on the market – only €15 for 500GB) will add any remaining Message-IDs to make your final file. Usenet.Farm has its own network and the XSNews network lets you have access with Newshosting to

  1. 4 different networks: Newshosting + Usenet.Farm + XSNews + Other T1
  2. 5 server locations: Newshosting US + Newshosting DE + Newshosting NL + Usenet.Farm NL + XSNews NL

XSNEWS - Tier 1 provider

XSNews is the only T1 provider based in Holland that has unlimited plans and block accounts.

This is an advantage because you can access the XSNews network (and so files and parts of files on the network) as you want (Block or unlimited), and at modest prices:

With an unlimited plan:

You can use it alone it your downloading habits don't require an extra USP since your files come out at 100%.

You want to make a combo Usenet to reduce the number of incomplete files, so an unlimited plan with XSNews can be the primary server. For Block Accounts you have the following whom offer the best deals: Newsgroupdirect - Tweaknews

With a block account:

Block accounts are relatively cheap. As soon as your client detects that a Message-ID is missing on your main server (Unmited account from Newshsoting), the data missing will be downloaded from XSNews's block account.

Our tip for the XSNews network: XSNews is the T1 provider of the network and has two sisters companies: Yabnews and EasyUsenet. We recommend these other two USPs since:

They have great rates that could also suit you. For example Yabnews has discount rates (23.00 – 6.00 CET) based on your downloading hours. Practical and cheap.

EasyUsenet allows file sharing between users on some plans. Ideal to reduce costs!

Yabnews, EasyUsenet has a free trial offer without entering any bank details.

Compare the special offers from the 3 USPs to get the best price.

Our advice for the XSNews network: if you want more than one USP to get 100% file completion then one of the USPs from the XSNews network (XSNews - YabnewsEasyUsenet) is worth getting. Prices are cheap, they are based in Holland and offer a good completeness of missing data

ASTRAWEB - Tier 1 provider

Best Usenet Only

Astraweb is one of the last few independent Usenet providers offering newsgroup deals that still own and run their own servers (NOT an Usenet-reseller). They own newsgroup servers and don't resell their access.

Astraweb is a good option for anyone that only wants one USP for downloading files.

Good price. Astraweb offers a unlimited Usenet secure subscription for $8/month or $96/Year with retention for more than 3050 days binary retention and continuing to grow.

File completion from only one USP is still possible as long as:

The type of files downloaded is unaffected by removal (DMCA notices)

Automatic downloading has been set up with Usenet PVR : Couchpotato, .…

You use Usenet Indexers: manual indexers or the RSS feed of from Newznab

Astraweb is perfect if you want just Usenet-only access with no features like VPN, search engine or usenet browser.

Get a “Backup” Usenet account with Astraweb: Astraweb can be combined with another USP to increase completion of certain files (article completeness). Astraweb boasts several advantages in this respect:

Astraweb has block accounts like the 1000 GB at $50

Astraweb's geographical jurisdiction is in Singapore and has two server locations: US (ssl-us.astraweb.com) et NL (ssl-eu.astraweb.com). When I tested completion via Message-IDs I rarely noticed any difference between the parts in Europe and the US. Put both addresses in your Newsreader anyway. Astraweb did work well to complete some remaining parts of files.

About Privacy: Privacy is something that is becoming more and more important everyday on Usenet. More and more people ask about anonymity and privacy. How secure Usenet is? - Are any logs kept? - Post anonymously to Usenet? In addition to ssl connection (This encryption helps to keep your username and password safe - This will also prevent your ISP of throttling your bandwith speed or using deep packet inspection technologies) Astraweb promises not to keep any logs (Except for crucial server operations logs. These are totally anonymous and do not log your username at all) of downloads and news reading activity, offer anonymous postings and they have anonymous group requests.

Usenet Multi-resellers

The principle is pretty simple. UsenetLink (aka Nextgennews) is a reseller for many different Tier 1 Providers. Their Feed does not depend on one Tier 1 (a classic system for the last 15 years) but on several. Usenetlink has commercial NNTP feeds from all major Usenet backbones (USPs and maybe ISPs)

Their goal: promote Usenet with high completion! When you download a file it is cut up into different articles. Sometimes the entire article is not present on your usual USP (Tier-1 or Reseller) so UsenetLink will search in the background for the file wherever it still exists on the Usenet network.

Usenet is a decentralised network where each Tier 1 provider communicates with the others to diffuse files almost instantly via a regular Feed. So if a file (made up of a dozen articles) is posted via the Tier-1 Newshosting then it will be immediately spread to all the other Tier 1 providers.

Usenetlink’s offer is based on this technical principle. There idea is to build a more complete version of Usenet

You can also construct your own “high completion” package by subscribing to different Tier 1 providers and resellers:

Best Usenet combo 1: Newshosting unlimited + Eweka Unlimited

Best Usenet combo 2: Newshosting unlimited + XSNews Block

Best Usenet combo 3: Newshosting unlimited + Usenet.Farm Block

Best Usenet combo 4: Eweka unlimited + XSNews Block

Best Usenet combo 5: Eweka unlimited + Usenet.Farm Block

Best Usenet combo 6: XSNews unlimited + Newsgroupdirect Block

Best Usenet combo 7: ExtremeUsenet unlimited + Usenetbucket unlimited

Note: UsenetLink and Nextgennews seem to be sister companies since the server addresses (news.usenetlink.com or news.nextgennews.net) lead to the same IP source. The UsenetLink administrator denies any link. This doesn’t make much difference for its users but the point should be made about the lack of judicial/commercial information.

Newsdemon offers a plan for everyone. Unlike many Usenet providers who tend to offer only one type of package, Newsdemon has a choice of three:

  • Monthly Limited account: Subscribe for a certain amount of GB, renewable every month.

  • Block Usenet account: A range from 10 GB to 1000 GB !!!!. Their most interesting deal, it comes without any time limits. Buy a certain amount of GB and use them when it suits you. No obligation for renewal. The block account option (somewhat ignored by most newsgroup providers) does have several advantages. For example, you only consume as much as you buy, with the option of occasional use. And it can be used to supplement another server with poor retention or completion rates: back up Usenet. Newsdemon is one the King of newsgroup block accounts with Newsgroupdirect

  • Unlimited newsgroup access: Newsdemon offers two Unlimited plans ranging from $9/month to $11/month
    • Newsdemon Super Unlimited $9/month - Newsdemon offers unlimited speeds and secure access to over 107,000 uncensored groups. Features include 50 simultaneous 256-Bit SSL Connections, 99% Completion, and long retention. This Unlimited Pro Plan includes Newsbin Pro (The free key is good indefinitely and includes one week of our Usenet Search service as a trial)
    • Newsdemon Platinum account $11/month - This plan includes Secure VPN Access. You can browse the net with complete confidence knowing that your identity cannot be obtained, and all information that you send and receive will be completely encased in an impenetrable encrypted shell. FastUsenet is an American Usenet provider and they resell UNS Holdings.

As a lot of Usenet providers, FastUsenet offers good retention (+2800 days), secure access, Multiples connections. But Nothing more than their competitors.

However some nice features:

- A webInterface to view picture and text groups.

- FastUsenet also comes with a free copy of Grabit. With your FastUsenet subscription you'll receive access to GrabIt search. GrabIt search is normally a $25/year fee but comes bundled with your subscription. The Grabit newsreader is a great addition to this service.

- Usenet Mobile Newsreader: Their Mobile Usenet newsreader allows you to access Usenet from anywhere (works with the Apple iPhone and iPad, its compatible with all smart phones such as Google Android and Microsoft Windows Phone).

- FastUsenet.org has a generous 14 day/15 GB free trial. It comes with the Newsreader Software w/Search and Web/Mobile gateways

They offer a wide range of Usenet accounts to meet a variety of needs!: unlimited, metered, and blocks.

  • TheCubeNet has multiple unlimited plans based on the number of connections. All of their plans offer unlimited Usenet access.  My favorite is Unlimited 50 SALE.
  •  They also have metered packages include a fixed amount of bandwidth a month.
  • Their block accounts are especially popular because theCubeNet block pricing is very competitive. Non-expiring block plans which are great for fills.

Here are the pros and cons of TheCubeNet:

  • * Pros : The retention time is comparable to other providers - TheCubeNet has built up a good reputation by offering their members regular promotions - TheCubeNet offers all subscribers a free registered copy of NewsRover.

  • * Cons : No Trial period - We don’t recommend metered plans because the price difference between metered and unlimited plans is so small - Their unlimited offers are confusing: the rates are based on the number of connections which is not very useful as long as the cheapest rate ($9.99/month) also has the most simultaneous connections! And the number of simultaneous connections is no longer an indicator of quality for Usenet: 8 connections are plenty. And why have an offer at the limited rate of 12 mbit which is more expensive ($12.99) than the unlimited one at $9.99! It would simply be easier to have one unlimited rate with 50 SSL connections, like most of thecubeNet's competitors.

Usenetnews is a Block-account specialist (like Newsgroupdirect). Sister site to Ngroups (with the same 2000 day retention and the same servers), Usenet-news was the first Usenet server to specialise in newsgroup block accounts. The result: an impressive range of options (from 2GB to 1024GB) at very low prices. Per GB the price is as low as 0.09 USD/GB when you buy 1024 GB for $92

Usenet-News is the top block account provider, offering both a good price and 60 simultaneous connections and you may connect simultaneously from different IPs.
Block-Accounts can be very useful even if unlimited newsgroup accounts seem to render them redundant. There are at least 4 main advantages:

  • Many users use mainly free access to newsgroups and need a block account to supplement their main service
  • Pay as you go
  • Excellent method of discovering or testing newsgroup access at unbeatable prices
  • Use Usenet-News as the “backup server” (Fill server)

NGProvider has created a comparison table for all the block account options - organised by size - from all the best providers: Summary of Usenet Block Account options

Ngroups.Net is an American Usenet provider headquartered in Las Vegas. The company has been around a long time (Since 2003 Ngroups.Net provides usenet access) and offers a wide range of Usenet plans.

Through UNS Holdings, Ngroups provides Usenet access with excellent binary retention (over 2000 days now) and free SSL.

Some nice additions:

  • Ngroups is offering secure online space for data backup free of charge with its partner LiveDrive. You can use it to store and swap data, photos videos, direct streaming through iphone/ipad... all unlimited !!! (This service normally costs $6,95 on its own!)
  • Recently NGroups.Net has launched FREE VPN service, included for users having an Unlimited Ngroups.NET Usenet account.
  • Ngroups with its partner association Usenet-News has made a commercial succes of good quality block accounts. Our review of Usenet-News - Block-account information

They have two simple unlimited plans:

    • $9.99 - "Unlimited Eco" account - Thanks to our partnership NGProvider and Ngroups.Net can offer the exclusive deal of unlimited access (2000 days retention - 30 connections) plus Unlimited online storage plus VPN (users are limited to 5Mbps speed and 50GB/month transfer via the VPN servers) for just $9.99/month (Identify our deal by the message: Welcome Ngprovider visitor to Ngroups.NET)

    • $19.99 - "Unlimited Extra" as "Unlimited Eco" Unlimited Usenet + Free Unlimited Storage), Plus: users have no limit in speed or transfer via the VPN servers. Nice bundle package if you’re looking for an extra layer of data transfer security.

We recommend "Unlimited Extra" for $19.99. Ngroups.Net is the last USP to offer online storage with its Usenet. This extra feature has largely been abandoned by other USPs, which is a shame since it is an interesting option even if it is no longer fashionable. Usenet + Secure Online Storage + VPN for $19.99 is a pretty good price, if you look at the package you get:

  • Unlimited Usenet downloads
  • No speed limit
  • Store photos, files and documents with Unlimited online storage
  • Free VPN service

Thundernews provides a good service (UNS Holdings's reseller). More expensive than Newsdemon (other UNS Holdings's reseller), but I have never had an outage and they are increasing retention up to 2800 days. Very fast answers too - Live Chat is very efficient. ThunderNews offers a wide assortment of unlimited, metered and block accounts (Thundernews blocks expire after 12 months).

Our favorite plans are the unlimited deals. Especially the Unlimited Special with Free ssl encryption. ThunderNews is currently offering a special, you can enjoy unlimited Usenet for $10.49 a month. A good value for money.

Here are the pros and cons of Thundernews:

  • * Pros : The retention time is comparable to other providers - Thundernews offers all subscribers a free registered copy of NewsRover - You can request a Newsgroup to be added

  • * Cons : No Trial period - We don’t recommend metered plans because the price difference between metered and unlimited plans is so small - Unlike the other Usenet providers sites the Thundernews site does NOT say the blocks never expire. Instead, when you select a block it shows: Term: 12 Month Term

But they do not offer all groups with all pay types (payments via Paypal which excludes adult groups), you can not share Usenet Blocks with your friends and there is quota on the amount of bandwidth you can carry forward and quota on the total amount carried forward over time (some users reported: My unlimited account says I am over quota!)

ALTOPIA - Tier 1 provider

No extra features, just Usenet-only offer

Unlimited account 2 connections per IP - $6/month

Unlimited account 5 connections per IP - $9/month

Unlimited account 10 connections per IP - $12/month

Unlimited account 15 connections per IP - $15/month

Hostname:

Regular Ports: 119

SSL Ports: 443, 563

Concurrent Connections: up to 20

Altopia is something of a UFO when it comes to the Usenet Providers’ market. Signing up to Altopia is similar to stepping back in time, to Usenet as it was at the end of the 20th century: an era when lots of small and independent USPs offered a basic service with weak retention (like Octanews), a simple webpage, and limited payment methods (CB) and packages based on the number of connections.

In the first years of the new millennium many of these USPs were bought up, or closed down because they did not develop with the times.

Altopia resisted and even boasts a solid base of loyal users who are interested in their Text hierarchies and Multipart binaries from between 2 and 15 parts (mostly jpegs).

From a technological point of view, Altopia is far behind is competitor: only 9-10 days retention on Multi-part binaries with more than 15 parts, completion (apart from DMCA files) which doesn’t reach 99% and only one server in the USA. You can only pay with credit card. (N.B. The account is not set up instantly, it takes a few hours.) But SSL is included for free!

But Altopia has a certain charm as an “outsider.” The speed of our package of 5 connections ($9.00/month) was not always stable. However for our usage the 10 days retention were easily enough, and matched Altopia’s promises.

Altopia has the privilege of being the last of the “small” USPs in America, not very well-known, almost a secret.

XSUSENET

SSL Ports: 563, 564, 600, 663, 664

Connections: 5 (Free Accounts) or 50 (Premiun Accounts)

XSUsenet is mainly known for its free Usenet access which is very popular.

XSUsenet is located in Sweden and uses UNS Holdings servers (EU Servers). It bears noting that:

  • Their prices are calculated on your connection speed. XSUsenet offers Flatrate Usenet accounts. On the main page XSUsenet only displays its 100 and 200 mbit rates. But by creating a free account, you have the chance to sign up for 10, 25, or 50 mbit accounts!

  • Compared to UNS Holdings, XSUsenet is more expensive and has less retention. For a cheaper offer and more retention, with servers based in Holland and in the US we recommend their reseller: UNS Holdings. XSUsenet is generally more expensive than its competition. It is obvious that this free offer uses a lot of human, costs money and technological resources.

  • If you are looking for a European Usenet server we would recommend: Eweka (same price, more retention!) or ExtremeUsenet (cheaper, with European servers) or UsenetBucket (cheaper, European servers) or Usenet.Farm (own servers + reseller of XSNews and Highwinds).

  • Their support is non-existent. Nothing back from them after 5 emails. Seems they don't reply to emails

HitNews offers Usenet access from servers based in the USA (UNS Holdings reseller) as well as its headquarters. So like all USPs situated in the US it is liable to DMCA. But the difference between the big American USPs that offer 2800 days retention and HitNews is the latter barely has 1100 days.

The prices are only advantageous for small connections (HitNews has speedcapped accounts based on your ADSL connection speed) because from 10 mbit it will be much more cost efficient to subscribe to NewsHosting by the year ($99) which gets you a lot more for the same price: 2800 days retention (instead of 1100), 30 connections (instead of 8) and a free Newsreader.

However during our tests the bandwidth corresponded to the 10 mbit deal with 8 SSL connections. As for the retention, it was overstated by HitNews since the 1100 days is only valid for certain groups.

GIGANEWS - Tier 1 provider

Corporate offices are based in US

Usenet servers geographic locations: USA Servers - Holland Servers - Hong Kong Servers - Giganews deploys servers in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Giganews has always had higher rates than the average, which was once justified. For a long time they surpassed everyone else in high retention and completion. And they added innovations like SSL which is now a standard for all current USPs.

But for the last few years other USPs have now been able to offer the same techical service for a lower price. Today Giganews offers Usenet access with less retention days than its competitors but a much higher price. Today Giganews not offers the world's longest and highest binary newsgroup retention !

Giganews' main flaw is its price. For $30/month ($360/year) you get a Usenet bundle (Diamond Package) which includes Usenet access + Newsreader (Outdated) + VPN. But the Diamond package has a big flaw:

It's Too expensive. If you want VPN access and Usenet access we advise you Newshosting ($99/year). For much less money you will have better result with Newshosting: Better Usenet - Better VPN - Better Newsreader ! - Better retention (For years Giganews offered the highest binary retention in the industry. That isn’t the case anymore)

Usenext like FirstLoad or Usenet.Nl are part of the Usenet servers which have three characteristics:

  • A generous free trial offer of 150 to 300 GB to use in 14 days.
  • Flatrate subscription: unlimited speed up to a certain number of GB, then limited speed.
  • Monthly rate much higher than the average.

These offers seem attractive but in reality they are not worth it:

The only advantage of this newsgroup provider is that is offers an integrated download programme. It is preconfigured with a search engine equipped for nzb. Ideal for beginners. If ease of use of newsgoups is important for you then choose Newshosting with more than 2800 days retention, a cheaper monthly rate ($9.99) and a free newsreader ten times better than Usenext !!!

Many people discover Newsgroups via Usenext or Usenet.NL. These two USPs are all over torrenting sites. It is true that many torrent users found Usenet via an ad for a trial offer on one of these torrent sites. But Many people find it difficult to close their accounts after the trial, casting a shadow on trustworthy Usenet services. Instead of attracting lots of new customers from torrents, we are afraid that Usenet gets a bad name from this kind of free trial.

Torrent users: if you discovered Newsgroups from a generous free trial offer advertised on a Tracker, stay with us, read more about the Usenet network and discover some great USPs and Usenet indexers.

Web-Based Binary Usenet Client (Web-Based NZB Downloader)  is a web interface that allows you to download Usenet content from an NZB on an internet browser. No more Newsreader, just an NZB and a browser. This is currently a very popular option.

It takes Usenet usage to the maximum simplicity by aiming to reduce it to the sole function of downloading via NZB without the other aspects (searching by header text, posts, image viewing, Ubackup, group creation).

In fact only one of Usenet’s many functions is offered by this client. But if the idea of a web-based interface appeals, then we would advise Easynews that makes the most of Usenet through its Webnewsgroup.
