Usenet Server Terms and Information - Newsgroup Server Glossary

Usenet or Newsgroup: is a world-wide distributed discussion system. It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. Binary groups are intended for postings with file attachments. The attachments are usually: pictures, movie clips, sound files, or software programs.

Back-end Usenet Provider: Actually there is a lot of Usenet access( see our list of Newsgroup Server Company, more than 50). Usenet is growning but a few are back-end Usenet Provider => They own newsgroup servers, storage and NNTP architecture. They are a few: Giganews, Astraweb, Highwinds and News-service. Giganews, Astraweb ang highwinds are the "big three". Giganews is the best back-end Usenet provider, they provide usenet access since 10 years. Highwinds doesn't provide newsgroup access, they resell (see our list below) usenet service and own a lot of newsgroup server companies (UsenetServer - Newshosting - Easynews)

Usenet Resellers: A reseller run there own usenet service without having dedicated servers. They buy gigs from a Back-end Usenet Provider and sell it on to customers. Some are "real" sister company as Powerusenet with Giganews. Others are "real" resellers.

* Sister company of Giganews: PowerUsenet and Usenet.net. Note: Just Giganews !!! with less retention. You've got same reliabilty and support levels of Giganews

* Owned by Giganews: Supernews. Note: Recently Giganews bought Supernews corporate users but Supernews still use their own infrastructure.

* Owned by Highwinds: UsenetServer - NewsHosting - Easynews. Note: On the last years, Highwinds bought a lot of newsgroups companies. UsenetServer, Newshosting and Easynews are not resellers of Highwinds, they run different servers, different storage and different NNTP architecture software.

* Highwinds resellers - which are too numerous to list: Newsgroupdirect , Newsdemon , Ngroups.net , Thundernews , AnonyNews , Usenet.se , Usenet-News , altbinaries.com , Newsgroups-Download , Usenetnow , Blocknews , Newsgroup-binaries , usenet-access Note: Newsdemon is the best Highwinds resellers with excellent management and serious.

Usenet Provider Account Types:

- Unlimited usenet access: The unlimited usenet accounts have no set download limit in bytes. No bandwitch limited. 100% unlimited newsgroup download, that means no limit at all. Ex: Giganews => Best Newsgroup Server

- Block usenet access (pay by the download): A block account is an account that you refresh as you use up your allocation (with no time limit). Usenet Block accounts are non expiring, one time payment. Usenet Blocks are purchased when you need them. Ex: Newsdemon

- Speedcapped Account: A speedcapped account does not restrict the number of bytes you can download, but the speed at which you can do so. Ex: SimplyUsenet

- Limited usenet access: Metered usenet accounts have a certain quota (monthly), and when it's reached it's not possible to download any more until you pay again. But some usenet providers "roll over" any part of the GigaBytes not used during a month and available for use in the next month. Ex: Newsdemon and Newsgroupdirect

- Webnews usenet access: You can read, post, and decode newsgroup content with a webbrowser (as Firefox). ex: Easynews

Binary Retention: means the time the Usenet server keeps articles around before expiring them. On each Usenet server the administrator will determine the retention for each Usenet newsgroup usually by allotting it a certain amount of hard drive space. The best retention rates is provided by Giganews. Giganews offers an industry leading days of binary retention. Most other providers have problems with completion as you reach in to the last 50 days of their retention claims. Giganews have the highest retention rate of all the newsgroup servers !!!!!

Usenet Simultaneous Connections: Once you start using Usenet seriously, speed becomes an important issue, especially if you download a lot of files. Most commercial Usenet service providers allow multiple connections at the same time, which can make far much faster downloading. EX: NewsHosting is now offering 60 connections with their NHXL account. We do not recommend using more connections than what is needed to fill your max bandwidth. Using too many connections may even decrease performance for many users! 50 or 60 connections helps only those who have ultra fast connections as 100Mbps. Unless you have ultra fast connections as 100Mbps we don't recommend using more than 8-10 connections.

SSL: SSL Encryption is another layer of NNTP traffic security protection that Usenet providers offer. All data passed from Usenet provider's servers to the customer's computer is encrypted.

VPN: VPN service allows you to privately and securely browse the web, e-mail, instant message, browse newsgroups .... VPN works by replacing your IP address and encrypting all of your Internet traffic between your computer and the VPN. Giganews has partnered with GoldenFrog to offer a VPN service for all Diamond customers, this VPN is called VyprVPN. VyprVPN is guaranteed free for all Diamond members => Best VPN ReviewsCompare and find VPN account providers.

Mimo Usenet browser: Mimo is a Usenet client that was created to allow quick and easy access to the extremely wide range of content that exists. Mimo supports newsgroup browsing, Usenet searching, binary content downloading, PAR2 recovery, RAR unpacking, text posting and NZB import. Still under development, but it 'll be an excellent free special features from Giganews Diamond

Newsreader: A newsreader is an application program that reads articles on Usenet. There are several different types of newsreaders. We advice Sabnzbd, a NZB downloader, It tries to offer maximum automation in downloading and post processing. => SABnzbd guide

Payment type:

- Credit card: All usenet providers

- Paypal: Giganews, PowerUsenet, Newsdemon, Astraweb, Ngroups.net , Usenet.Net, Thundernews, NewsHosting, UsenetServer, Supernews

- Moneybookers or E-Gold: Ngroups.net

Concurrent Connections: 20 or 50

A good Newsgroups Server. Newsgroupdirect has been our favourite for a long time. I have never had an outage and they are increasing retention up to 600 days.

Unlimited account with SSL at 20 $ is good but the price is higher than the average offered by its competitors. Support is great and Newsgroupdirect offers now offers 30 GB of free online storage (via StorageNinja) with their Unlimited Plus account (a $20/mo value)

The unlimited offer (with Free ssl encryption) is a good value for money. Thundernews offers 600 days binary retention. They allow 50 connections too.
